Russian is a Slavic language, found within the Indo-European family. Russian is the second most-used language on the internet, behind English.
The language we know today began to develop a distinct identity from its Church Slavonic origins in the early 18th century, when Peter the Great reformed and simplified the Cyrillic alphabet used for Russian. Further reforms, aimed at simplifying and standardizing Russian writing and grammar, took place after the Revolution of 1917. As well as being the official language of the Russian Federation, it is also widely spoken in the former Soviet republics, such as Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Lithuania and is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
The Russian writing system, which forms the basis of many other Slavic languages, is based on one of the most used systems of the world – Cyrillic. This alphabet derives from the Greek uncial script and consists of 33 letters. Though transliterating – converting the Cyrillic script into the Latin alphabet – is often done for place names, the Cyrillic script is still required for an authentic Russian text.
We offer professional Russian to English and English to Russian translations – and other language combinations including Russian.
A tip to bear in mind is to allow flexibility in the layout of your documents. Russian to English translations typically contract by about 10% depending on the subject matter, whilst translating out of English into Russian will cause an expansion of around the same percentage. For more complex or DTP file formats, you may find that you need to enlist the help of our typesetting (or DTP) services. Please enquire for further details.
