More about the Polish language & Poland
Polish is a language of the Lechitic subgroup of West Slavic languages, and is the native language of Poland. It is the second most widely-spoken Slavic language, after Russian.
Within Poland, there are generally considered to be four major dialect groups, each associated with a geographical area of Poland: Greater Polish, Lesser Polish, Silesian and Masovian.
Polish has a similar word order to English, i.e. subject-verb-object. Nouns belong to one of three genders: masculine, feminine or neuter. The Polish alphabet is Latin and does not contain the letters q, x and v, with several additional letters formed using diacritics — marks above or below the letter which change its pronunciation.
The Polish Language Council has spearheaded a campaign to preserve the challenging system of its diacritical marks, saying the tails, dots and strokes are becoming obsolete under the pressure of IT and speed but are a necessity.
Whilst most closely related to fellow West Slavic languages such as Czech and Slovak, the Polish language borrows a great deal of vocabulary from Russian, German, French, Italian and even English.
There is a strong history of migration from Poland with significant Polish minorities in the USA, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, France, the UK, Sweden and Ireland as well as Brazil, Canada, Australia and Argentina. Polish is by far the UK’s biggest immigrant language, with over 546,000 speakers in England and Wales.
An EU member, Poland’s economy is considered to be one of the healthiest of the post-Communist countries. It has even been labelled a ‘European growth champion’, with annual GDP growth consistently around the 5 percent mark.
Thanks to its strong, diversified domestic market, low private debt and flexible currency (Poland is not a member of the Eurozone), Poland is considered to be the only European economy to have avoided the global financial crisis of the 21st Century.
