At Alexika, we’ve recently had the privilege of having two interns with us from the MA in Translation Course at the University of Lancaster. Amelia is an English, Spanish, French and Norwegian linguist – Catherine speaks English, Spanish and German. The course at Lancaster is very highly regarded, and Lancaster’s Department of Languages and Cultures ranks very highly in the UK – their internship was one module of the course.
The interns undertook a range of tasks including preparing files for professional translation and shadow proof-reading, and they were exposed to language project management. They received training on using the latest translation technology. Catherine and Amelia also gave presentations to the team on the market for professional translation and the marketing of translation technology.
So what did we learn from the experience at Alexika? Well, we all enjoy and are interested in languages, so it was great to hear about the how translation is taught at Lancaster, and how language degrees are structured there. We got some great questions, which made us thoroughly reassess our workflows. It was refreshing to hear and discuss fresh insights into the world of language and translation. We also had fun assessing Alexika’s social media output – our Twitter feed might be more interesting now!
Thank you Catherine and Amelia, and good luck in your future linguistic careers.
